#MergerMondays: Canary Media + Energy News Network
I think we all can agree that we need some good news right now.
So, let’s take a moment to celebrate the merger of Canary Media and Energy News Network! Official on February 1, this union aims to strengthen clean energy reporting in the U.S.
Canary Media, founded just 4 years ago, and Energy News Network, a 15-year project of the Minnesota Fresh Energy policy organization, came together at very different points in their organization life cycles.
Canary Media was working to diversify its revenue model while ENN was working to develop new revenue streams. The two organizations had been periodically discussing collaboration possibilities, but this was the perfect opportunity for them to benefit from each other’s strengths.
ENN’s funder connections and state-focused connections can help Canary Media reach its goals while Canary Media’s larger editorial team and earned-income program can support ENN’s work. Ken Paulman, director of ENN, stresses that this merger goes beyond operational efficiency. This collaboration aims to expand the role of journalism as well as the mechanics of a nonprofit business model to create a “more sustainable newsroom.”
Both organizations will now operate under Canary Media’s banner to provide more robust reporting to a larger audience of elected officials, entrepreneurs, industry professionals and concerned citizens.
