Considering Closure: Shining a spotlight on nonprofit dissolution
Closure is a natural part of the nonprofit life cycle. Without it, it’s nearly impossible to maximize the slim resources available to the nonprofit sector.
I really hope this is one of many steps to bring dissolution into the conversation as a viable option for nonprofits to succeed in carrying out their mission rather than a last resort that organizations are desperately trying to avoid.
I’m excited to share this piece for the National Council of Nonprofits that dives into what closure really means.
Kate Piatt-Eckert, the Director of the Mission Sustainability Initiative at Forefront, and I discuss the stigma around closure, dive into the steps of a well-thought-out closing strategy and offer some insights into how to talk about it.
We have already shone the spotlight on many organizations that made the brave choice to step away after years of service, demonstrating the beauty and benefits of a graceful exit. The Hudson River Art Collective and Fiction Writers Review are among the entries in our #dissolutionhalloffame.
I can’t wait to keep this conversation going as we continue to talk about closure and commend and learn from the organizations who have taken the step to do it. Stay tuned for more #dissolution news!
